On July 21, the German games industry association named the theme for Gamescom 2026: “Games Spark Excitement for the Future.” Two overarching trends came with it: “Saving the world through play” and “Small teams, huge success,” the latter presumably a nod to how much weight small studios now carry among the show’s headline releases. Gamescom week, the world’s largest computer and video games trade fair, runs in Cologne from August 24 to 30.
August 24 opens gamescom dev, the business conference for developers. August 25 brings the Opening Night Live broadcast and its usual run of new project announcements. Public days run through August 30. The format hasn’t changed from previous years: industry and press get the floor first; then the halls open to everyone.
Cologne spends the week hosting both political ceremonies and the first public playable demos of major releases. In 2026, those two strands of the program overlap more visibly than usual.
Germany’s president attends for the first time
On August 27, Gamescom gets a visit from Frank-Walter Steinmeier, President of Germany. It’s the first time a sitting president has come to the show. He’s set to open gamescom congress, the industry’s business track. Also expected at the opening: Henna Virkkunen, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission; Lars Klingbeil, Vice Chancellor and Finance Minister of Germany; Dorothee Bär, Minister of Research, Technology and Space; and Hendrik Wüst, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia.
Political interest in the show isn’t new. More than 600 officials from various countries showed up in 2025 alone. Cologne has held the show for years now, so a head of state’s visit reads less like something conferring status on the city and more like an acknowledgment of status it already has as Germany’s gaming capital.
The connection between major gaming events and online slots lies primarily in game design and their shared audience. Both formats use familiar themes, progression systems, bonus mechanics, and quick feedback to shape the gameplay experience. In the slots market, Spinlander Casino uses the website spinlander22.com to introduce players to the casino’s offerings, positioning the brand in a distinct segment built on certain shared design principles.
Xbox brings 25 games to Cologne
Xbox announced its Gamescom 2026 program on July 28: 25 upcoming games and 140 playable stations at the company’s Cologne booth. That’s a lot of real estate for one booth, even measured against the biggest trade show in the industry. Visitors get 6v6 multiplayer in Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4, the first public playable demo of the Gears of War: E-Day campaign ahead of its October 6, 2026 release, and hands-on time with Minecraft Dungeons II.
Live gameplay of Fable will also run at the booth. Other announced projects include METRO 2039, STRANGER THAN HEAVEN, and Alien: Isolation 2.
Gears of War: E-Day and Minecraft Dungeons II aren’t just there to watch, either. A public hands-on this close to launch is unusual for releases of this size.
When to visit the Xbox booth
Xbox’s broadcasts presenting the projects air August 26 and 27, starting at 16:00 CEST. The booth itself, A-0.61 in Hall 7, opens to show visitors from August 27 to 30. In-person playable demos are limited to the last four days of Gamescom week.
Some of these games launch this fall. The Gears of War: E-Day demo in Cologne will be one of the last public checkpoints before its October 6 release.
