The Swedes essentially dominate the industry, having historically created many innovative and engaging games that have caught the attention of avid gamers everywhere, including Minecraft and Cities: Skylines. Through much hard work and dedication, it went from simply being a video game division of a role-playing game publisher and a motion pictures company to its own independent company in the early 2000s.
Over time, it developed a reputation for releasing strategy video games that encompass role-playing games and management simulators. The company is considered to operate in quite a niche genre, providing easily moddable environments and ample downloadable content to keep games fresh and their communities active.
With two studios acquired and one founded in 2020, the total number of internal studios increased to five. At the time, Paradox had clearly been investing a lot of time, money, and effort into development, creating mobile games, and dipping its toes into other ventures.
What Is Plaguing Paradox?
Despite all this effort, Paradox found itself facing many significant changes and disruptions. CEO Ebba Ljungerud resigned in 2020 due to differing opinions on strategy, and the company decided to cancel the development of multiple unannounced products the year after. A total of 15 projects were left on the back burner because the team wanted to allocate resources to “projects with the highest potential,” which unfortunately wouldn’t pay off. In 2021, the company found itself in hot water, thanks to an internal survey. What Games Were Delayed or Canceled?
The biggest blow for Paradox was the cancellation of its long-awaited life simulator, Life by You, which was said to rival The Sims. Fans who were anticipating the game were already disappointed after three delays in September 2023, March 2024, and June 2024, making this cancellation the final straw. Life by You had been in development for almost half a decade, meaning Paradox was discarding away significant invested resources with no returns whatsoever. The decision ultimately hinged on a failure to meet expectations, and whether the team will attempt a similar game in the future remains to be seen. The company’s profits dropped 90% after the cancellation, resulting in a loss of around $19.2 million in development costs.
And that isn’t Paradox’s only delay or cancellation. One of the studio’s most popular games, Prison Architect, was supposed to have a sequel released in March 2024, but delays pushed it to May 2024, then September 2024, and it was finally delayed indefinitely. Cities Skyline 2 was another much-anticipated console release, but Paradox just couldn’t meet any of its targets, leading to an indefinite delay. Again, there were tons of performance issues in the game, and Paradox just couldn’t keep up. Even on Windows, where it was released in 2023, the game received mixed reviews, proving that the company didn’t deliver.
Bloodlines 2 was considered a disaster even before its launch date, Millennia received tepid reactions, Lamplighters League was a huge flop, and Star Trek Infinite was released yet abandoned shortly after. It seems like Paradox needs to go back and revamp its publishing and development processes and see what it can do to change these trends.
Future Outlook
Many companies have experienced delays, cancellations, and changes in their team structure, but it’s rare that they’ve experienced such intense and repeated issues across multiple titles. For example, CD Projekt Red faced turmoil with Cyberpunk 2077, and Hello Games struggled initially with No Man’s Sky, but both games eventually became widely successful in the gaming community.
